Colemono, Chilean eggnog

The colemono or cola de mono (monkey tail) is a cocktail of Chilean gastronomy, made with brandy, milk, coffee, sugar and spices (optionally: cinnamon, cloves, vanilla and orange peel).

Its alcohol content reaches 14 degrees and it is widely consumed at Christmas and New Year, often accompanied by Easter bread. Due to its sweetness and alcohol, a glass of this concoction can contain 181 calories, which is why its excessive consumption is not recommended.

The reason why it is called monkey tail has different versions, one of them refers to the fact that the drink would have been packaged and sold in bottles of Anís del Mono, from Spain, very popular in America, whose label showed a monkey with a long tail. . That’s where the name would come from.

Although there are versions that link it to the name of President Montt, since those closest to him called him ´el mono Montt´ (monkey Montt), and it is said that one day the President enjoyed an evening with his friends at the house of Filomena Cortés; he would have asked for his Colt revolver when leaving, and since no one wanted him to leave, they told him that they had not found him and convinced him to continue the party. Since the wines and spirits had run out, the guests mixed aguardiente and sugar into a pitcher of café con leche (milk with coffee). The drink was very successful and was baptized as “Colt de Montt”, a name that degenerated into “cole e mon”, “colemono” to finally reach “cola de mono”.

They always ask me how many days does the Cola de Mono last? It is important to point out that it is important to always keep it refrigerated, in these conditions it lasts between 8 to 10 days. Since Christmas falls in summer in Chile, I recommend drinking it with ice to keep it cold and have no doubt that it will become a must at the end of the year parties.
